Scaly or acicular crystals, with benzene or formaldehyde smell. Slightly soluble in water, and easily soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, benzene, carbon disulfide, and carbon tetrachloride.

Benzoic acid and its sodium salt can be used as a bacteriostat for latex, toothpaste, jam or other food products, as well as mordant for dyeing and printing. In addition, it can be used as pharmaceutical and dye intermediates for the preparation of plasticizers and spices, or as a rust inhibitor for steel equipment.
